Bologna Ring Road Bypass
The Bologna area represents the hinge of the national transport system for north-south connections, both in terms of the railway and motorway networks. The Bologna motorway and ring road semi-ring interconnects the main national and regional traffic routes and serves to collect and distribute flows coming from the central axis of the country (via the A1 and A13 motorways), from the border with Austria (via the A22 Brenner motorway), and from the Adriatic coast (via the A14 motorway), as well as serving local traffic from areas surrounding the Bologna metropolitan area. The project to upgrade Bologna’s motorway and ring road system involves the construction of a series of works: widening of the existing motorway and ring road system from junction 3 to junction 13 of the parallel road with the following specifications: construction of three lanes plus an emergency lane in each direction on the A14; construction of three lanes plus an emergency lane in each direction on the sections of the parallel road from junction 3 to junction 6 and from junction 8 to junction 13; and four lanes plus an emergency lane on the section connecting junction 6 to junction 8.
